The women's concerns gained global recognition during the UN Women's Decade (1975-1985). The women's movement in Kenya has a commitment to the global movement having contributed tremendously at the previous conferences in Mexico in 1975,

Copenhagen in 1980, and successfully lobbied to be host to the third conference in 1985 (in Nairobi) and finally became signatory to the Convention (CEDAW).

Kenya adopted and domesticated the PFA immediately after the fourth world conference on women and institutional mechanisms were set up.

In domesticating the PFA, Kenya retained all the 12 critical areas of concern. The priority critical areas for Kenya include Women and Poverty, Women and the Economy, Health, education, Trainingolence Against Women and Human Rights of Women.
