The national council of women of Kenya (NCWK) was formed in 1964 as an umbrella organizations to co-ordinate the activities of Kenyan women, Non-governmental organizations (NGO’s) and community based organizations (CBOs).NCWK is the focal point for NGO implementation of the Beijing platform for Action. Currently there are over 150 women organizations affiliated to the organization. In the 80’s the council expanded to include in its membership registered community-based to reach out to grassroots women.

t’s a Non-profit NGO formed under the Kenya chapter and is affiliated to the international council of women. The organization has lived up to its mission to enhance the status of women in all spheres.


The organization executes its mandate through among other strategies, networking and collaboration at all levels with other women.

It has maintained its unique status of women organizations and champion of emerging women issues in Kenya. It is the focal point for implementation of the Beijing platform for action.agencies, policy skills training, civic education, national seminars and workshops, capacity building, and dissemination of research based information. NCWK enjoys consultative status with international organizations and Africa national women council. An executive committee of elected volunteer officials is responsible for the general management and oversight of the organization. It governs with the assistance of a permanent secretariat with core staff.

The council further manages through several standing committees constituted to address key areas of concern to women. The following are some of the key committees; Educational and Training, Environment, legal status of women, women in media, gender sensitization, and political empowerment. The strategic plan addresses the strengthening the institutional capacity building of the council and its standing committees and district network among others.

The framework for the strategic plan was eveloped during a three-day strategic planning workshop held at stem hotel, Nakuru from 16th to 19th December 2003. the participants were NCWK provincial and district co-coordinators from all provinces; affiliate local NGO’s, religious district branches, and professional women groups. The process was executed in two phases.

PhaseI workshop held at Bounty hotel, Nairobi in November 2003 reviewed the situation of women in Kenya, NCWK operations and objectives for existing in view of emerging trends in women issues, its achievements since 1964 and developed a log frame analysis.

Phase II workshop held in December 2003 at Stem hotel Nakuru developed this strategic plan through a consultative process of stakeholders.

Vision statement

NCWK’s vision is to become the prime national council in Africa resolutely liberating and empowering Kenyan women and girls to attain Economic, social and political equality; to be well informed; to have access to basic services and achieve maximum representation at all decision making levels as a channel to the advancement of the status of women, enhancement of dignity and quality of life

  • Carry out education campaigns on women’s rights among NCWK members and collaborating organizations and to sensitize the general public on the observance of those rights.

  • Facilitate implementation of project aimed at raising the income o women, enhance their control of resources and enhance their access to credit.

  • Lobby and advocate for affirmative action which will lead to at least 50% representation of women in all decision making levels, and among other things, lobby parliament and policy makers for the passage of laws and policies in achieving gender equality in all spheres of development.

  • Provide networking and a common interest discussion forum for Kenyan women and provide a forum for discussing issues of common interest, provide a forum where women can meet and discuss issues affecting them and the society in general.

  • Formulate and implement pioneering, projects aimed at testing appropriate ways and means of solving problems and challenges facing the Kenyan women.

  • Mobilize Kenyan women and motivate them to participate in the political arena and to realize their common bargaining power.

  • Mobilize and motivate the Kenyan women to part
    icipate in the provision of and advocate for access to basic infrastructural services in order to improve their standard of living.

  • Forge friendships, better understanding as well as co-existence in diversity between communities and provide conflict resolution services.

  • Recruit, involve and encourage young women to participate in the NCWK activities.

  • Collect, package and disseminate relevant information to women and communities.

  • Carry out networking activities with similar organizations, locally and internationally and represent members and the women of Kenya in various for a.

  • Address emerging trends in women issues and monitor implementation of international conventions and resolutions on women affairs.

  • Advocate for women access to basic infrastructure services to improve their standard of living, quality of lifestyle and enhance their dignity.

  • Empower women to participate in conflict management and peace building and forge friendships and coexistence between diverse communities.

  • Encourage participation and involvement to young women in NCWK activities.

  • Carry out research, publication and dissemination of information to women in appropriate formats and languages suitable for women at different levels of development.

The council’s objectives

  1. To bring together women’s associations of this country for consultation on the action to be taken to promote their warfare, the welfare of the individuals in a family, the nation, and making in general, and to facilitate friendship and understanding between all women.
  2. To encourage women to fulfill responsibilities and to play their full part in developing the country.
  3. To encourage voluntary social service through-out the country of wherever opportunity offers arises;
  4. To help women groups organize themselves into viable entities which can either join the already existing women’s organization or the national council of women of Kenya itself.
  5. To act as clearing house for information on all forms relating to women’s development and welfare;
  6. To co-operate with such other organizations and agencies whose aims and objectives are in line with those of the council and
  7. To publish and encourage publication or production of books, journals, reports and other materials of whatever nature which contribute to the welfare of women of Kenya.
