A few farsighted women who saw the need to consolidate the activities of women in Kenya founded NCWK in 1964. Among the founder members were H.E Dr. Margaret koinange and Hon, Phoebe Asiyo, Salome Nolega. It is registered under the NGO coordination Act of Kenya as voluntary membership umbrella body of women’s organizations in Kenya.

It is non-profit non-political organization formed as the Kenya chapter to of the international council of women. Initial affiliates were local women NGOs and women professional bodies.

In the 90’s the council expanded to include in its membership registered community-based organizations to reach out to grassroots women in the

districts. Membership consists of local women NGO”s, CBOs, religious associations, and women professional bodies. Membership is open to all registered women groups or those exempted from registration. Currently there are over 150 women organizations affiliated to the organization among them maendeleoya wanawake and federation of federation of women lawyers. NCWK’s overall mission is to organize, consolidate and coordinate the activities of women organizations in Kenya. Partners in development have supported it over years. An executive committee of elected volunteer officials is responsible for the general management and oversight of the organization and through 22 standing committees on focused operation areas.

Chairpersons of member organization have the right to attend executive committee meetings as observers. At the top is an elected executive committee that is accountable to stakeholders at the annual General Meeting. It works through standing committees and with the assistance of a permanent core staff at the secretariat.

Highlights of accomplishment

3. Workshops and seminars on gender and health in conjunction with maendeleo ya     wanawake; Kenya human rights consultative workshops and constitutional review     workshops.

4. Training workshops on project planning and proposal writing.

5. NCWK institutional capacity building largely supported by USAID

6. Dissemination of information through its quarterly newsletter

‘Mwelekeo’ and radio

7. programs in vernacular for greater reach to grassroots women.


East Africa cooperation initiative together with Tanzania and national council of     women to promote networking on gender issues and policy.

Civic education was carried out with among others the following objectives:-

1. Empower aspiring women candidates.

2. Sensitize women on need for civic education.

3. Develop a directory of prospective women candidates

4. Sensitize women on the power of their vote.

5. Sensitize civil society on gender issues.

6. Mobilize resources.

Thematic NGO workshops among others on analysis of APA/GPA/CEDWA, RIO Agenda 21, WSSD, National country paper and NGO position paper and identify key areas of concern to Kenya women.
Needs assessment survey to foster closer local affiliation and collaboration.


Regional focal field level institution (REFI) workshop to facilitate resource mobilization, ensure equitable use of human financial resource for implementation of Beijing platform of action.
Gender training and research workshops in Kampala, Kenya and Dares Salem and Kenya in collaboration with AMREF.


Establishment of Gender monitoring board to monitor and evaluate the implementation of APA/GPA by the government, communities, donors and individuals.
Post Beijing evaluation meeting to disseminate information on the Beijing Conference and identified post Beijing activities for implementation all over the country.
